News | Special collection for Shelter boxes
Following the disasters that occurred in the southern hemisphere, the earthquake in New Zealand and the tsunami in Japan, which resulted in thousands being left homeless the club decided to make a monetary donation to New Zealand and to raise money for at least one Shelter Box to help replace the void left by the number sent to Japan. It was agreed that the club should arrange for a collection to be made in the Centre MK. The earliest date that was available was April 16th and this was gratefully accepted.
John Slater, a member of the International Committee offered to make the journey to Ware, to collect a Shelter Box from Robert Browning, the District officer responsible for these matters. The box was duly collected and the club was allocated and the club was allocated, by the Centre Officers, a stand in Midsummer Mall.
On the day the stand was set up by 9.00 am and the Shelter Box was displayed. Unfortunately, the space allocated did not give us enough space to erect the tent, but it did give us an opportunity to talk to people and explain what is included. Unfortunately the footfall was not great, but people did give, albeit mostly in small change. However, we received £20 in paper donations, but the rest was mostly in small change. This was to be expected as it was mid month and many people are suffering from the current financial climate. However, with a small donation by a club member the amount collected reached £300. It is understood that further donations may be made to bring the total up to the cost of one Shelter Box.
Thanks to all who helped on the day and especial thanks to John Slater for picking up the box and arranging its return.
It was a tiring but rewarding day.
