Swimathon 2012 | Launch Event
The launch for the 2012 Swimathon took place at the Holiday Inn, Central Milton Keynes on Monday 16th January 2012. It might have been a frosty January night outside, but in the Holiday Inn’s Orchard Suite on Monday night the room sizzled with warmth and goodwill when Rotarians met with local dignitaries and charity representatives to gear themselves up for the Swimathon on March 10 at Stantonbury. The Mayor of Milton Keynes, Cllr Allan Richards, The Mayor of Newport Pagnell, Cllr Wendy Egan and our DG, John Bromley were there and for the first time we were joined by a local Head Teacher, John O’Donnell. ( For the past few years to our delight, some of the local schools have taken up the challenge and the Schools Trophy is now a regular feature.) Guests and Rotarians mingled at the reception then sat down and chatted over dinner, after which Swimathon Committee Chair Bill Blyth ran through the history of Swimathon and gave a picture of what happens on the day, for anyone who had not been involved before. Then the microphone was passed round and each charity representative told everyone a little about what they do and how they would use the money we raise. In this relaxed and intimate atmosphere some of the charities were able to network with other organisations of which they were previously unaware and bonds were forged. Tony Milhofer spoke about the organisation of clickers, pool managers and runners pool-side and the evening was rounded off by District Governor John Bromley praising our club, the swimmers and their sponsors for making Swimathon a jewel in the crown of Rotary. Pictured below are Geoff Saunders (REMAP) and Cpt William Holland, (The Rifles Care for Casualties) who, as a result of the earlier presentations, were able to 'forge a new alliance' and help each other. |
