                                  President's Message

The President of Rotary International 2011-12 has chosen his theme to be Reach Within to Embrace Humanity.  He asks us to look within ourselves, to understand that all of humanity has the same dreams, similar hopes, the same aspirations and similar problems.  We all yearn for peace and contentment and what we work to bring to others, we must first find within ourselves.

If we strengthen ourselves, we strengthen those around us – a strong family.  I came from a Rotary family, and the family is where everything begins and where there has been success – build upon that to create continuity.  If we want to see peace around us we have to start by being the change we wish to see in the world.  If we wish for peace – we must live in peace within our homes and communities.  We must try to be the instrument of change to help all around us to be able to experience peace, good health, reduce child mortality and to spread literacy and prevent hunger.  The Polio Plus challenge has been a prime example of how Rotarians together can make those changes.

I have chosen a virtual unheard of charity for us to support this year.  We constantly hear about mental problems becoming much more prevalent.  The rise of life expectancy has brought with it many more people suffering from some form of dementia. There are currently 820,000 people living with Dementia and this is set to rise to over one million by 2025. Last year, Adrian chose the Alzheimer Society.  This year I have chosen a relatively new group – Admiral Nurses, not to be confused with MacMillan Nurses who care for those suffering from cancer.

I would like to make a change for those suffering from dementia, and their carers  by giving them support within this area.

We also must concentrate on bringing on board new Rotarians – I know there are plenty of people out there who would like to see the same changes as we are hoping to achieve.  Our website gives more information on becoming a Rotarian

Remember Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth and the Rotary motto is Service Above Self.

It is a great privilege to be a member of an 18 carat organisation as this is, but I do believe that you only get out of something as much as you put in.  This is not my year – it is our year and I hope that we shall all enjoy some very special social events, raise lots of money for needy causes, help people who earnestly need our assistance but most of all nurture our friendships – here and abroad, and support each other in many ways.

The Rotary International President is asking all Rotarians to Reach Within to Embrace Humanity. And in peace, harmony and friendship let us bring change and a more joyful future for us all.
