The second Milton Keynes Young Musician of the Year competition took place on 22nd February 2012 in the Chrysalis theatre. Seven students from the Milton Keynes Music Service took part providing a large audience with some superbly played music. The event was supported by this club and four other Milton Keynes Rotary clubs. The winner was pianist Hannah Slavin and the runner up Flutist James Westlake. Our congratulations to both of them. The adjudicators were Elizabeth Bancroft, Paul Fensom and John Witchell.

                                  Long Meadow School project

CONGRATULATIONS TO LONG MEADOW PRIMARY SCHOOL

                                  How £240 became £4,200 !!

In September 2010 the Deputy Head Teacher wrote to us seeking our support for a scheme to raise money for a mutually agreed charity. We were asked to contribute £240 in order that 240 children could receive £1 each and over a six week period starting in February 2011 find ways of generating a profit after buying materials for cleaning cars, baking cakes etc…The aims of the project were to develop children’s understanding of business, improve their writing skills by providing reports on their activities and making a positive contribution to the lives of others.

By chance we had recently received a request for support from a national charity, the Child Bereavement Charity. Given that a pupil in the school had died in the summer of 2010 it made sense that this should be the chosen charity.

The plan proved far more successful than was ever imagined. Many children, with the support of their parents as well as the school, raised over £100 each. Some realised that working together gave them more starting capital. Two boys collected and sold sports equipment making a total of £248.  Large numbers of cakes, biscuits, and cards were made and sold at a profit. The purchase of a sealed money box and taken to the work place of the boy’s father raised £117 in fines for swearing, bad jokes, rudeness and lateness for work! Sadly one young lad was obliged to report that his ‘business’ had gone ‘bankrupt’. On 16th May 2011 a cheque for £4,200 was given to a representative of the charity.

An incredible achievement – well done Long Meadow

Many older people increasingly find it difficult to carry out routine tasks around their homes due to a variety of disabilities and conditions. In collaboration with AGE UK in Milton Keynes and once a year in May club members supported by members of their families and members from other rotary clubs in the area offer to carry out a range of tasks (free of charge) from house cleaning (e.g. windows and gutters), decorating and repairs, gardening activities, the removal of unwanted items and shopping trips.

This year on Saturday 7th May more than 20 volunteers completed over 30 jobs. Although this was notably fewer than in recent years the work was very much appreciated by the recipients, one over 100 years old, and was again very rewarding for the volunteers - who are not always younger than those they help!

                                  Yet another successful "Technology Tournament!"

Each year Rotary clubs in Milton Keynes arrange an event for local secondary schools. This year twenty four teams from seven schools (four pupils per team) were given the unseen task of building a crane able to travel along a track, under a bridge, pick up a ‘contaminated’ object from a container, return to the starting point and deposit the object! Congratulations to all those who took part with special thanks for the support of Debbie Brock, Mayor of Milton Keynes, and to Denbigh School for hosting a very well organised event. Hazeley School won the advanced award, Denbigh the intermediate with St Paul’s and Oakgrove Schools 1st equal in the basic grade.

                                  Drumming Party

Families with disabled members often find it very difficult to find things to do during school holidays. The club has supported a drumming party for such families each of the last two summers. The organisers of this years event, Carers Milton Keynes, write: “It was a very happy occasion which was blessed with good weather..It's great to see parents enjoying a picnic and able to chat to one another while the children are entertained by the drummer and face painter.”

                                  Kids Out

The ‘Kids Out’ charity aims to bring fun and happiness into the lives of disadvantaged/disabled children in the UK. Since 1999 they have worked with Rotary clubs to take countless children on a magical day out in June each year. Working with the Redway Special School in Milton Keynes we have enabled 25 to 30 children to visit Whipsnade Zoo each year accompanied by teachers, club members and carers. More about 'Kids Out'
The attached photographs were taken during the 2010 outing. This year the visit to Whipsnade on 8th June was again a fun day despite the rain. The sea lions were terrific.
The committee this year is Roger Boulton, David Biles, Keith Davies, Alan Downer, David Goodson, Simon Gill, Euan Henderson & Robert Martin.
